What will happen during my consultation?

Your first visit with Dr. Lin will include a comprehensive new patient evaluation focused solely on you and your functional needs. It includes a physical exam, review of imaging studies and relevant medical records as well as discussion about findings, diagnoses and regenerative treatment options.

Does Dr. Lin practice pain management?

Dr. Lin specializes in non-surgical orthopedic regenerative medicine with the goal of understanding, diagnosing and nourishing the healing process for painful injuries. He has helped thousands of patients restore function and regain quality of life. This is different from the field of pain management, a specialty that focuses on reducing the body’s ability to feel pain.

How can I get a Regenexx treatment if I don't live in Hawaii?

We offer telemedicine and phone consultations that include everything that an in-office consult does, except the physical exam and ultrasound. Our patient care coordinator can schedule you for a physical exam, ultrasound exam and Regenexx procedure when you plan to visit Oahu.

What is the advantage of Regenexx PRP over a generic treatment?

Regenexx PRP (platelet rich plasma) procedures are more concentrated and purer than PRP created by the automated machines used at most pain clinics, increasing our ability to stimulate the body’s natural healing response. Regenexx PRP procedures are performed with high-level imaging guidance to ensure the most accurate placement of PRP.

Is PRP the same as stem cells (BMAC)?

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is created by drawing a patient’s blood, and then removing the red blood cells before concentrating the platelets within the plasma. These platelets contain growth factors and cytokines, which signaling proteins that increase your body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Bone marrow aspirate or BMAC is created by harvesting fluid from the bone marrow in the posterior hip, a more complex and technically demanding procedure than with platelets alone. BMAC is a fluid that contains mesenchymal stem cells- the cells in our bodies that are able to repair damage as it occurs. Stem cells are unique in their ability to play multiple roles in the healing process. Not only can they act as building blocks to repair cartilage or tendon damage, but they also release additional growth factors and cytokines to further stimulate the healing process. More advanced cases of arthritis, cartilage or tendon damage will often require BMAC treatment, instead of PRP alone.

Why choose a Regenexx BMAC stem cell treatment rather than amniotic/birth tissue products?

During your Regenexx cellular treatment procedure, our lab will count the total number of nucleated cells to ensure that we can obtain the optimal number of your own, living cells to treat your condition. In contrast, recent studies at Cornell University show that generic amniotic and birth tissue injections do not contain any live cells. They also carry risks of infection from anonymous donors.

How much does treatment cost?

Consultations start at $250 and may be reimbursed by your insurance provider. Regenerative treatments start at about $1500.

Fees are typically lower than expected and are based on a customized treatment plan to meet your unique needs. All fees are shared prior to your procedure and our care coordinator will provide a breakdown following your consultation.

Many find that the cost for treatment is less than their insurance deductible and co-payments for surgery. A fee schedule is available and your Health Savings Account (HSA) may apply. Otherwise, all payments are due at the time of service.

The technology required and stem cell harvesting process means the prices for BMAC are higher than for PRP. For PRP, Dr. Lin will customize your treatment plan based on your unique history, degree of pathology and areas of anatomy needing treatment.

Do you accept my insurance?

While your initial consultation may be covered, most private Hawaii insurance companies do not cover Regenerative medicine, PRP or stem cell treatments. In some cases, worker’s compensations or motor vehicle accident insurance will provide coverage for some procedures.

Many patients find that the cost for treatment is less than their insurance deductible and co-payment for surgery.
